A 100 g bar holds a little more than three troy ounces of fine silver. It is often the first bar people buy after a few coins, because it remains small enough to store anywhere.
A silver bar carries the refiner’s mark, its weight, its purity and, on most brands, a serial number. Keep the certificate or the original packaging when there is one: it speeds up the check when you sell.
Per gram, silver bars usually carry a lower premium than coins, but the difference is smaller at 100 g than at 1 kg. The 100 g format is a compromise: cheaper per gram than a pile of coins, easier to sell than a kilo bar.
In France, buying silver bars is subject to VAT. Compare the retailer’s price with the day’s silver price to see what you pay above the metal.
