The gold bar necklace: a minimalist classic, and its bullion cousin

The bar necklace is one of the simplest pieces in a jewellery box: a slim rectangle of metal on a fine chain. Its simplicity is its strength. It goes with a T-shirt and with an evening dress, it can be engraved, and it layers easily. It also has a cousin that has nothing to do with fashion: the small gold bar, the kind sold for its gold, which some people wear as a pendant. The two are worth telling apart.
The jewelry bar necklace
Horizontal or vertical
A horizontal bar is fixed to the chain at both ends and sits flat across the base of the neck. It is the classic style, sober and graphic, and it stays in place. A vertical bar hangs from a single loop, like a pendant; it moves more, lengthens the neckline and works well with V-necks.
Sizes and finishes
Bars range from a couple of centimetres to the width of the collarbone, and from very thin to a few millimetres thick. A polished finish shines; a brushed or satin finish is more discreet and hides scratches. Some bars are set with a single small stone or a line of tiny diamonds.
Engraving
The flat surface of a bar is ideal for engraving: initials, a name, a date, coordinates, a short word. Keep it short; a few characters remain readable, a whole sentence does not. Engraving on both sides of a vertical bar is a nice way to keep a message private.
Which gold?
- Solid gold, 9, 14 or 18 ct, is durable and can be engraved deeply.
- Gold vermeil (gold over silver) is more affordable; engraving cuts through the plating to the silver below, which is visible.
- Gold plated base metal is the cheapest and the least durable.
For a piece worn daily, solid gold of 9 or 14 ct resists scratches best.
Length
A horizontal bar usually looks best at the base of the neck or on the collarbone, around 40 to 45 cm. A vertical bar suits slightly longer chains, 45 to 50 cm, so it can hang freely.
The bullion cousin: small investment gold bars
Investment gold bars are a different product entirely. They are made of gold at 999.9 thousandths, sold by weight at a price that follows the gold market, from 1 g upwards. They are usually supplied sealed in a card with a serial number and certificate.
Some people wear a small investment bar as a pendant, either with a frame or a bail added, or in a version made with a loop. That is perfectly possible, but there are trade-offs:
| Jewelry bar necklace | Small investment bar worn as pendant | |
|---|---|---|
| Gold content | 37.5 % to 75 % (9 to 18 ct) | 99.99 % |
| Hardness | Good for daily wear | Very soft; scratches and dents easily |
| Price driver | Design, workmanship, brand | Weight of gold plus a premium |
| Resale | Usually at gold weight, below retail price | Close to the gold price, if intact |
| Engraving | Easy | Possible, but it reduces resale value |
The key point is resale. A sealed investment bar can be sold back quickly at close to the gold price. Once it has been taken out of its seal, scratched by daily wear or engraved, a dealer will usually need to test it and may buy it only as scrap gold. If the aim is to keep the gold’s value intact, keep the bar sealed; if the aim is to wear it, accept that it becomes jewelry.

Styling a bar necklace
- Alone, on a fine chain, it is the definition of everyday minimalism.
- Layered, with a slightly longer fine chain and a small pendant, it forms the base of a stack.
- With a shirt, a horizontal bar at the base of the neck sits neatly inside the collar.
- As a gift, engraved with initials or a date, it is personal without being sentimental.
Care
Remove it for sleep, sport and swimming. Clean it with warm water and mild soap, dry it with a soft cloth, and store it flat so the chain does not knot. Polished bars show fine scratches over time; a jeweller can polish them out, although that slowly removes metal and engraving depth.
A bar necklace proves that a piece of jewelry does not need to be elaborate to be elegant. Chosen in solid gold, at the right length, it can be worn every day for years.
