The American Silver Eagle has been struck by the United States Mint since 1986 and is one of the most traded silver coins in the world. Its face value is one US dollar.
The obverse uses Adolph Weinman’s Walking Liberty, first seen on the half dollar in 1916: Liberty striding towards the rising sun, draped in the flag. The reverse was redesigned in 2021, when the heraldic eagle of the early years gave way to an eagle landing with an oak branch. Coins of both types trade freely.
The Silver Eagle usually carries a higher premium than the Britannia or the Maple Leaf, because of strong demand in the United States. Bought in Europe, it makes sense mostly for people who want a well-known American coin in a mixed silver holding.
Like every silver coin, it can develop spots or toning over time. That does not change the silver content, but a clean coin in its capsule or tube is easier to sell.
